Uniting for Change
In response to ongoing community tensions, MARCH, in collaboration with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) 12th Brigade, organized a community food distribution initiative. This initiative ran from December 18th to December 22nd, 2024, with the aim of addressing the food shortages in the Jabal Mohsen and Beb El Tebbeneh areas and reducing tensions between the LAF and these communities by humanizing the LAF through the distribution of food parcels.
The purpose of this activity was also to support the LAF during times of hardship and economic despair, as well as to alter the perception of both the communities and the LAF youth by identifying shared needs and challenges.
Preparation in Action: Team building and Group Expression
Before the on-the-ground food distribution, team-building and expressive sessions were conducted to foster stronger relationships between the army and MARCH youth.
Executing Impact
Prior to the on-ground execution of the initiative, the youth of MARCH identified families in need in their areas, and distribution centers were established with the assistance of the army.
The initiative successfully resulted in the distribution of 5,280 food parcels, with 3,255 parcels allocated to the community and 2,025 parcels to the army. The parcels included essential food items like rice, lentils, and cooking oil. The distribution was managed cooperatively by the youth and the army to ensure a smooth operation.
Notably, the involvement of women in distribution roles challenged traditional gender roles and highlighted their active contributions to community support.
The Power of Food Aid in Healing Divides and Building Trust
Feedback from the youth highlighted the initiative’s positive impact on community perceptions and relationships with the army. The youth reported a sense of accomplishment and noted the project’s role in improving community ties and reducing negative sentiments towards the army. The visual identity of the project, marked by the “United for Tripoli” slogan on the parcels, reinforced the message of unity and collaboration.
Overall, the community food distribution project exemplified how targeted outreach and collaboration can address community needs, build trust, and promote unity across diverse groups.
